Cold Symmetry Reveals Mortal Shell 2 Gameplay, Showcases Three New Shells in Smooth New Trailer

Developer Cold Symmetry and publisher Playstack have revealed our first look at gameplay for Mortal Shell 2, the sequel to the developer’s first crack at a Soulslike that initially released back in 2020. The sequel carries the trick that made it different from other titles in the genre forward, with different ‘Shells’ defining your playstyle, and as we see in today’s new trailer, several aspects of the game have been majorly upgraded.

For starters, the world in Mortal Shell 2 seems far more expansive than in the first game, with more to explore and more space for you to move around if you feel like you’re getting squeezed into a corner and need to get a new angle.

The animations and combat also looks to be much smoother and free-flowing than in the first Mortal Shell, though that’s something we won’t really know until we’ve gone hands-on with the coming sequel.

The trailer shows off three new Shells players will be able to inhabit, each with melee and ranged attacks, some of which look almost out of place, like a weapon that is practically a fantasy-themed machine gun placed in a world of swords and monsters.

Mortal Shell 2 was initially revealed back at Summer Game Fest 2025, and though we’ve not seen an official release date yet, it still has a 2026 release window. At the time of this writing as we move into April, Summer Game Fest 2026 is practically around the corner, noted partially by the fact that publishers like Xbox have already started to slate when their big SGF showcases will be.
