It’s been nearly nine years since the release of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, the most recent installment in Naughty Dog‘s award-winning action/adventure franchise, but the wait for a new Uncharted game announcement may bear fruit.
Folks have feared the IP might be abandoned for good, especially given Naughty Dog’s precedents: the Californian studio previously sunsetted both Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter (although the former, being owned by Activision, is active once again). However, there was always a difference: while those were child-oriented franchises, Uncharted is adult-themed. It also offers a stark contrast to The Last of Us, with its slightly cheeky tone. Plus, the 2022 film adaptation showed that Sony still believes in keeping the IP alive.

All that is to say, a comeback would not be particularly surprising to see, and that’s exactly what fans are now hoping for after Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Game Director Shaun Escayg posted a “research” photo on his Instagram.
The picture shows a typical Uncharted-like setting, which was identified as Fort George in Trinidad & Tobago, a British fortification established in 1804 and located in the hills above Port of Spain, the current capital and chief port of the Caribbean state.
Shaun Escayg had left Naughty Dog after the release of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, joining Crystal Dynamics to lead the ill-fated Marvel’s Avengers. He returned to Naughty Dog in April 2021 and has since been rumored to be leading the development of a second unannounced project, which is being worked on in parallel with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Further confirmation came from studio president Neil Druckmann himself, who said that Naughty Dog is working on a second game in which he is producing.
If it really is a new Uncharted game, then the question becomes: who will be the main character? Nathan Drake‘s arc seemed to end perfectly with 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and some fans wouldn’t want to spoil that with him returning in a lead role. There’s been speculation that the new game could feature his daughter, Cassie, the Lost Legacy duo (Chloe and Nadine), Nathan’s brother Sam, or perhaps even Sully (in a prequel).
